Vorgee in the Community

Vorgee in the Community
Vorgee was the proud sponsor of 2012 National Pool Lifesaving championships which took place in June at the Kinsmen Sports Center in Edmonton.  We hope to be involved in the 2012 National Surf Lifesaving Championships, taking place in Lake Simon, Qc this summer.
Here what the provincial governing body had to say:

If I ever fall in the water, I hope someone like Scott Southwood is nearby.
The 19-year-old, who already holds several national records in Lifesaving Sport was in top form over the weekend of June 1-3, as the Lifesaving Society of Alberta and the Northwest Territories hosted the Canadian Pool Lifesaving Championships. Southwood padded his already-impressive resume with a new Canadian record in the 100m Rescue Medley, finishing with a time of a minute and fifteen seconds flat -- and breaking the previous record by almost a second.
There were numerous records broken, and impressive showings from many of the more than 80 athletes who came to the event from all over Canada. Seven athletes were named to the national team, including Alberta's Mason Kuhn.
Alberta took home its fourth consecutive national title, highlighting how much the sport has grown in this province. In particular, the 16-19 team from Alberta was particularly strong, which bodes well for Alberta's chances in the upcoming years' competitions.

—Triathlon Canada's fab five combine veterans and youth poised to shock the world in London—

TORONTO—A group of five Canadian athletes are determined to deliver a knockout punch when they step into the Olympic triathlon ring for the 2012 Games in London, July 27-August 12.

Led by wily two-time Olympic medallist Simon Whitfield, Triathlon Canada selected five athletes that blend a potent mix of veteran leadership with youthful enthusiasm to the Canadian Olympic Team on Tuesday.

Three men and two women, including three athletes with Olympic experience and two making their Games debut, will wear the Canadian flag when they step into London's Hyde Park for the triathlon events, August 4 (women) and August 7 (men).

"We have selected a unique group of experienced athletes who have demonstrated over the last Olympic quadrennial that Canada has the ability to contend with the world's best athletes in the sport of triathlon," said Alan Trivett, executive director, Triathlon Canada. "This group has endured significant highs and lows in their journey to qualify for London, but have not lost sight of our collective goal of seeing the Canadian flag raised above the triathlon podium."

One of Canada's most accomplished Olympians, Simon Whitfield, will headline the list of names while making his fourth trip to the Games. The Victoria resident captured the hearts of the nation with his thrilling gold-medal victory in triathlon's debut at the 2000 Games in Sydney, and his silver-medal charge in Beijing in 2008. Following a very targeted race plan over the last four years in an effort to peak in London, Whitfield, 37, will look to shock the world one more time in hopes of winning his third Olympic medal for Canada.

Whitfield will lead two other Canadian men who recently completed an epic two-year journey to secure three spots for the Canucks in London.

Kyle Jones, of Oakville, Ont., will make his Olympic debut in 2012. An alternate at the 2008 Games, Jones has made huge strides to develop into an elite racer over the last two years. The 27-year-old is coming off career-best top-15 performances on the World Triathlon Series, has won three Continental Cup races in 2011, and finished fourth at the Pan Am Games and Edmonton World Cup last year.

Victoria's Brent McMahon earned a return trip back to the largest sporting spectacle after not making the team in 2008. The 31-year-old secured the third Canadian spot at the final qualification race in Madrid to wrap up a grueling journey around the world over the last 18 months. The 2004 Olympian had a monster task in front of him to rack up enough points after being sidelined for 18 months with a career-threatening knee injury. Nothing short of remarkable, McMahon executed his plan to near perfection while capturing his first World Cup victory in Hungary, winning the bronze medal at the Pan Am Games, and also added three bronze medals in Continental Cup races along the way to consistently placing in the top of the pack at World Triathlon Series races.

Meanwhile, an Olympic veteran and a rookie will represent Canada in the women's Olympic triathlon race.

Montreal's Kathy Tremblay will make her second-straight trip to the Summer Games following a best-ever start to the critical 2012 season. Battling to fight her way into top-25 over the last three years, the gutsy 29-year-old Tremblay captured her career-first World Cup victory in Ishigaki, Japan this spring, one week after posting her best finish on the World Triathlon Series when she was eighth at the season-opener in Sydney, Australia.

Tremblay will be joined on the start line with one of the brightest young stars in the sport, Paula Findlay, who will look to be fully recovered from a nagging hip injury in time to make her first Olympic appearance. The 23-year-old Findlay's quick surge to the top of the international triathlon rankings over the last two years has been nothing short of incredible. The Edmontonian's historic golden run began in 2010 when she shocked the world to win on the 2012 Olympic course in London in just her second-ever World Triathlon Series race. She followed that performance up with a victory two weeks later in Kitzbuhel, Austria before a fifth-place result at the Grand Final in Budapest, Hungary in September. Findlay crushed any doubts she may be a one-season wonder by winning the first three races last year: on the iconic course in Sydney, Australia; in Madrid, Spain; and she successfully defended her title in Kitzbuhel.

"When healthy, this is truly one of the most talented Canadian teams in our sport's history heading into an Olympics, which is a testament to the continued strength and growth of our national program," said Trivett. "Through the generous support and leadership of Own the Podium, along with our corporate partners, we have been able to deliver the resources our athletes required to reach this point.  We are now fully engaged in completing our journey with the aim to contribute to the Canadian Olympic Team's goal of finishing in the top-12 of the overall medal count. Our team of athletes, coaches, medical practitioners, national staff and Board of Directors are committed to achieving Olympic excellence in London this summer."

Each of the Canadian athletes will continue following their individual training and competition plans, both domestically and abroad, leading to London.

Triathlon Canada is the governing body for triathlon in the country. Recognized as an Olympic medal sport since 2000, Triathlon Canada's mandate is to promote, foster, organize and develop the sport of triathlon, and its related disciplines, in Canada. ATHLETE QUOTES:

    Kyle Jones (Oakville, Ont.):
"My father was a canoe coach at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics. I was born in 1984 so was pretty young, but I was surrounded in that Olympic environment at an early age. It definitely became a lifelong goal of mine so it is a thrill to finally achieve it. I'm really looking forward to doing some hard training over the next month to prepare for this race."

    Brent McMahon (Victoria)
"It has been a long but condensed effort to qualify because I did 20 races in 12 months. It has always been a lifetime goal to compete at the Olympics and to do it twice is very gratifying. My main goal now is to maintain my health leading into the Games. Getting really fit is the focus so I can go out there and have the best race of my career."

    Simon Whitfield (Victoria)
"The first step was to get on the team, and the second step was to get a full squad of three men qualified for London. I have great camaraderie with Brent and  Kyle. Having three athletes on the start line will give Canada a better chance to achieving our goal in 2012."

    Paula Findlay (Edmonton)
"Two years ago I didn't think that it was even possible to compete in London, but when it became a realistic possibility, my whole focus has been on getting on the team. I'm really excited and appreciate the effort our Canadian women have made to earn a second spot. I'm also excited and happy for our men to have earned three spots in London. I think the fact we are sending a full team is a bit victory for us. It is great that this is now official, and I'm looking forward to racing at the Olympics with Kathy (Tremblay)."

    Kathy Tremblay (Montreal)
"There was no second option – the plan this year was always to qualify for the Olympics so it is gratifying to have that finally realized. There has only been one other woman in Canada to compete in two Olympic triathlons so it is a real privilege to be going to my second Games. I have been training very hard, and I believe if I can get into that lead pack out after the swim in London anything can happen."

Canada’s Zsofia Balazs earns Canada's first ever Olympic nomination in marathon swimming

Canada's Zsofia Balazs earns Canada's first ever Olympic nomination in marathon swimming

SETUBAL, Portugal – Zsofia Balazs of Toronto produced an extraordinary final lap and finished sixth in the 10 kilometre FINA Olympic Marathon Swimming Qualifier on Saturday. With the result, she earns her first career Olympic team nomination.

Balazs is also the first Canadian to gain a spot in an Olympic marathon swimming race. Canada had no entries in 2008 when marathon swimming made its Olympic debut in Beijing.

''Right now, I don't think it's hit me yet that I'm actually going to the Olympic Games,'' said Balazs, 21. ''It's something that I've wanted for so long. The biggest challenge for me this week was actually believing in myself that I could actually do it.''

The race was held in frigid waters on Setubal Bay and Balazs was exhausted as she approached the sixth and final lap. She was 13th after five laps after clocking first, fourth, fifth and fourth in the first four laps respectively.

''I didn't really know where I was,'' said the two-time world championship team member. ''I did a really good last turn though and realized there wasn't that many swimmers ahead of me.''

Haley Anderson of the U.S., won the gold medal in one hour and 44 minutes and 30.6 seconds. Eva Risztov of Hungary took second in 1:44:32.0 and her compatriot Anna Olasz was third in 1:44:36.8.

Balazs finished in 1:44:38.8. The top-nine swimmers, a limit of one per nation, earned their ticket to London.

Nadine Williams of Edmonton was 11th in 1:44:48.8. ''This was a breakthrough race for me,'' said Williams, 18, who was ahead of Balazs entering the final lap. ''My goal was a top-15 and to come here and show I can race with the best in the world is a big confidence boost.''

Pierre Lafontaine, Swimming Canada's CEO and National Coach, was thrilled with the performance.

''Led by coach Ron Jacks we've been working hard on the open water swimming program,'' said Lafontaine. The first four laps today were very tight and both our girls raced very smart.''

The men's 10-kilometre marathon swimming event is on Sunday. Canada has two entries: Richard Weinberger of Victoria and Xavier Desharnais of Sherbooke, Que.

Richard Weinberger adds name to Olympic nomination list

Richard Weinberger of Victoria overcame a rough start to win the silver medal on Sunday in the men's 10 kilometre race at the FINA Olympic Marathon Swimming Qualifier on Saturday. With the result, he earns a first career Olympic team nomination.
SETUBAL, Portugal – Richard Weinberger of Victoria overcame a rough start to win the silver medal on Sunday in the men's 10 kilometre race at the FINA Olympic Marathon Swimming Qualifier on Saturday. With the result, he earns a first career Olympic team nomination.

Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia won the gold medal in one hour and 45 minutes and 18.5 seconds. Weinberger, 22, followed in 1:45:30.2 and Petar Stoychev of Bulgariawas third in 1:45:34.1

Within the first 200 metres, Weinberger ripped off a bothersome cap and accidently, at the same time, lost his goggles. He was forced to stop and put on his goggles back on which put him in last place early in the race.

Weinberger's split times clearly indicate the incredible comeback he made. He was in order 49th, 23rd, 15th, eighth and fifth at the splits in the six-lap race.

''There are a lot of ups and downs in marathon swimming so we train for that,'' said Weinberger. ''I knew I would just have to chip away and rely a lot on my training. My race plan didn't really work out but I knew what I had to do to catch the field.''

Weinberger has made a name for himself in the past year winning key marathon events.

He won the Olympic test event last summer at Hyde Park, and went on to winning the Pan American Games. During the World Cup season, Weinberger collected a silver inArgentina, and bronze in Brazil.

''To know I'm going to the Olympics is just unexplainable,'' said Weinberger. ''I don,t think it has sunk in just yet.''

Xavier Desharnais of Sherbrooke, Que., was 20th. ''It was a very difficult race,'' he said. ''The dynamics were much different. I'm disappointed with the result but it was a valuable experience.''

The top-nine finishers –with a limit of one per country – earned an Olympic nomination.

Canada has two marathon swimmign nominees for the Olympics. On Saturday, Zsofia Balazs of Toronto earned her spot with a sixth place finish in the women's 10 kilometre.

Canada had no entries in 2008.

''This was a very successful four years for us in marathon swimming,'' said Swimming Canada's CEO and national coach Pierre Lafontaine. ''We worked very hard to improve the program and the athletes are gaining confidence.''

    Attack Glare Face On

CANADA’S FIRST POLARISED SWIMMING GOGGLES: THE VORGEE OSPREY AND ECLIPSE ARE THE PERFECT GOGGLES FOR SWIMMING OUTDOORS.

Vorgee’s Osprey and new Eclipse goggles use the same type of polarizing lens found in leading brands of sunglasses. Vorgee introduced the Osprey goggle in 2009 when we kept hearing complaints from open water swimmers and triathletes about the problems they were having with reflective glare off the water and its affect on their vision and performance. The Vorgee design team began its research by looking at the kinds of polarizing lenses worn by other sports people – cyclists, skiers, sailors – who needed to perform at a high level in glary, reflective environments. These findings were then applied to swimming goggle technology and the Vorgee Osprey was born.
Following on from the success of the Osprey, the smaller framed Eclipse goggle was created.
Both the Osprey and Eclipse goggles feature polarised, UV protected, anti-fog coated lenses that provide zero distortion and optimum viewing clarity, no matter what the conditions. Combine these features with a single piece lens, a frame design that enhances comfort and sight lines and a quick fit strap system, and you have the perfect goggle for swimming outdoors.

    Aussies take on the Channel

Vorgee is proud to be supporting four young men and their coach from Western Australia, who this year will be attempting to make the fastest crossing of the English Channel. The team comprises of Tim Quinlan, Dan Green, Blair Redfern and Rory Pilgrim.

The crossing of the English Channel is a gruelling swim through tough conditions, with expected water temperatures of 14°C – 17°C.

To prepare for the swim the boys will be training in water temperatures of 15° throughout the Australian winter. Then, just prior to the swim they will head over to Dover where they will train daily in Dover Harbour. On event day, the team will leave from Shakespeare Beach and aim to reach Cap Gris Nez in France. The total distance is approximately 21 land miles.

The Vorgee team look forward to supporting these four determined young men as they aim to cross the English Channel in a world record breaking time.

Some interesting facts about the English Channel crossing:
    • Solo crossings only have a 10% success rate (Teams tend to have greater success)
    • Less people swim the English Channel than climb Mt Everest.
    • Generally, Australia has the fastest channel crossing, from around the world.
